Worship; means “to obey, to submit, to serve, to show humility, to deify.” As a religious term, it refers to “conscious obedience that is meritorious and expresses reverence and closeness to Allah.” Worshiping Allah is the pinnacle of obedience and respect. It is stated in the Qur’an that humans were created to worship Allah (Adh-Dhariyat, 51/56) and that all prophets invited people to worship Allah (Al-Baqarah, 2/83).
The concept of worship in the Qur’an is used in various meanings, such as monotheism (An-Nisa, 4/36), obedience (Al-Baqarah, 2/172), supplication (Ghafir, 40/60), submission (Al-Fatiha, 1/5), faith and righteous deeds (An-Nisa, 4/172-173), glorification and prostration to Allah (Al-A’raf, 7/206), and knowing and recognizing Allah (Adh-Dhariyat, 51/56). Based on these meanings, worship, in its broad sense, implies observing the commands and prohibitions of Islam and safeguarding the limits set by Allah.
For a behavior to be considered worship, one must have faith, intention, and sincerity. Worship should be done for the sake of Allah’s pleasure and in accordance with Islam.
In terms of practice, worship can be broadly categorized into four types: a) Heartfelt worship, such as faith, sincerity, intention, contemplation, knowledge, patience, and piety. b) Physical worship, such as prayer, fasting, remembrance and supplication with the tongue, showing kindness to parents, treating people well, and maintaining family ties. c) Worship involving wealth and possessions, such as paying zakat, giving charity, helping relatives and the poor, and spending in the way of Allah. d) Worship involving both wealth and physical effort, such as performing Hajj and engaging in jihad.
