Belief in Angels in Islam
In Islam, belief in angels is one of the six pillars of faith and is an essential element of the basic beliefs. Angels are beings created by Allah from light, who do not possess free will, always obey Allah, and fulfill His commands. Angels, who are free from sin, are different from humans and do not have physical bodies. They do not have genders and are exempt from human needs such as eating and drinking. Four great angels mentioned by name in the Qur’an are: Jibril (the angel of revelation), Mikail (the angel responsible for natural events), Israfil (the angel assigned to blow the trumpet), and Azrail (the angel responsible for taking souls). Additionally, there are angels assigned to record human deeds, such as Kiramen Katibin, and those who perform tasks like questioning the deceased in the grave, such as Munkar and Nakir. Belief in angels plays a crucial role in understanding Allah’s power and wisdom in Islamic belief. Believing in angels is necessary for the perfection of faith.
